What Is a Diffuser?
An essential oil diffuser is a device that disperses essential oils into the air as a fine mist or vapour, filling your room with their scent and therapeutic benefits. Unlike burning candles or using synthetic air fresheners, diffusers use pure essential oils β so what you breathe in is exactly what nature intended.
Diffusers are one of the most popular ways to enjoy aromatherapy at home across Europe, and for good reason: they are simple to use, safe, and allow you to fully customise your experience around your mood and needs.
Types of Diffusers β Which One Is Right for You?
π§ Ultrasonic Diffuser
Uses water and ultrasonic vibrations to create a cool mist. Gentle on the oils and doubles as a light humidifier. Best for beginners.
π¬οΈ Nebulising Diffuser
Uses no water β disperses pure essential oil mist directly into the air. Strongest scent and fastest effect, but uses more oil. Most powerful option.
πΏ Reed Diffuser
Natural reed sticks absorb oil from a bottle and passively release scent. No electricity needed. Continuous, subtle fragrance. Low maintenance.
π₯ Heat Diffuser
Warms the oil to release fragrance. Simple and affordable, though heat can alter some of the therapeutic compounds in the oil. Budget option.
Our recommendation:Β For most beginners, an ultrasonic diffuser is the best place to start. It is easy to use, gentle on your oils, and widely available across Europe. The guide below focuses on ultrasonic diffusers.
How to Use a Diffuser β Step by Step
Step 1 β Place on a flat, stable surface
Choose a surface at least 50 cm off the ground β a table or shelf works well. Keep it away from electronics and curtains, and ensure the room has good air circulation.
Step 2 β Fill with clean, room-temperature water
Remove the lid and fill the water tank up to the fill line (usually 100β200 ml). Do not overfill. Filtered water is slightly better as it reduces mineral build-up over time.
Step 3 β Add your essential oils
Add 5β10 drops directly into the water. Start with fewer drops if it is your first time β you can always add more. See the room guide below for exact amounts.
Step 4 β Replace the lid and switch on
Most diffusers offer continuous or intermittent mist (15 seconds on, 15 seconds off). Intermittent mode is gentler and extends your oil and water supply.
Step 5 β Diffuse for 30β60 minutes, then ventilate
After each session, open a window briefly to allow fresh air in. This prevents the scent from becoming overpowering and ensures good air circulation.
Step 6 β Clean after each use
Empty any remaining water and wipe the inside of the tank dry with a soft cloth. Once a week, clean with a few drops of white vinegar diluted in water β run it for 5 minutes, then rinse and dry.
How Many Drops? β A Room-by-Room Guide
The right number of drops depends on the size of your room. As a general rule, less is more when starting out.

Safety Tips for Diffusing
-
Ventilate your spaceΒ β always open a window after each session. Never run a diffuser in a fully sealed room for extended periods.
-
ChildrenΒ β use only mild oils (lavender, roman chamomile) at half the recommended drops. Avoid diffusing around babies under 3 months old.
-
PetsΒ β oregano, peppermint and pine should be avoided around cats and dogs. Always allow pets to leave the room freely.
-
PregnancyΒ β consult your midwife before diffusing. Melissa and oregano should be used with caution.
-
30β60 minute ruleΒ β do not diffuse continuously all day. Breaks allow your senses to reset and prevent overexposure.
-
Never ingestΒ β diffused oils are for inhalation only. Never drink the water from a diffuser.
Common Questions
Can I use tap water in my diffuser?
Yes, tap water works fine. Filtered or room-temperature water is slightly better as it reduces mineral build-up inside the tank over time, which makes cleaning easier.
How long does a session last?
Most ultrasonic diffusers run for 2β6 hours on a full tank, depending on the model. Intermittent mode extends this significantly and is gentler on the oils.
Why can't I smell the oil after a while?
This is called olfactory fatigue β your nose adapts to continuous scent and stops registering it. Leave the room for 10β15 minutes and you will smell it clearly again. The diffuser has not stopped working.
How often should I clean my diffuser?
Wipe the tank dry after every use. Do a deeper clean once a week using diluted white vinegar β run it for 5 minutes, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
Can I mix any essential oils together?
Yes β the blends in this guide are all safe to use together. As a beginner, stick to 2β3 oils per blend and stay within the drops guidelines above.
